BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the government’s crisis has deepened after the 12th parliamentary elections boycotted by the opposition.
“They [government] have a false perception that they’ve overcome the crisis. I say the crisis has just deepened further. The crisis of the Awami League and their government has intensified. If they (govt)
don’t realise this right now and try to solve this, the future is not very good for them,” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the remarks while addressing a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital. The press conference was arranged to inform the media of the party decisions made in its Standing Committee meeting held on 8 May.
He claimed that around 2,000 leaders and activists of their party have been sent to jail in “false, fabricated and fictitious” cases as part the process of depoliticisation by sentencing and imprisoning opposition political leaders and activists.
“The meeting strongly denounced the process of unilaterally trying and sentencing leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies. The meeting thinks that the government is using the judicial process as a tool to implement the process of depoliticisation by sentencing and imprisoning opposition political leaders and activists,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
The BNP Standing Committee called for an immediately halt to the process and withdraw of all “false” cases and stopping the use of the judicial process as a tool, he said. “The court is the last resort of people, but they are not finding remedies there.”
The BNP secretary general said a state system in which morals and values are sacrificed for the sake of so-called development is not considered a developed state by the people, while it is necessary to remember that life should not be lost to livelihood.
“The ongoing movement is aimed at building a non-discriminatory democratic state and society and the movement of BNP will continue until this aspiration of the people is realised,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul alleged that the government has created a vested group, providing them with opportunities to plunder assets through corruption and irregularities.
“Since there’s no accountability at any level of this government, a special tribe is being created through those who are providing financial support to the illegal activities of this illegal government, for unbridled bank looting, money laundering, public money theft,” the BNP secretary general added.
Meanwhile, the BNP liaison committee on Sunday started meetings with the allies to discuss their next course of action.
On the first day, the party leaders held a meeting with the top leaders of the 12-party alliance and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) at the party chairperson’s office in the afternoon.
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan and Vice-Chairman Mohammad Shahjahan, among others, were present at the meeting.
“We discussed the country’s latest political situation, democracy and financial crisis and public sufferings. We’ll come up with simultaneous movement on different issues soon,” Mohammad Shahajahan told the Daily Sun after the meeting.
