Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Mymensingh, on Thursday celebrated its 19th founding anniversary in a festive manner.
Marking the day, the university campus, including Bangabandhu Sculpture and Nazrul Sculpture, was decorated lucratively and national flags were hoisted in front of the administrative building in the morning.
Later, students, teachers, officials and employees of the university brought out a colourful rally that concluded with a discussion held at Gaahi Sammyar Gaan Mancha at 11am.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Soumitra Sekhar Dey presided over the event where Md Abul Kalam Azad MP, former principal secretary to the Prime Minister, Economic Relations Division, Power Division and secretary to the PMO, was present as the chief guest.
Speaking at the event, Md Abul Kalam Azad said, “Our dream was to build an institution like Visva-Bharati here. But I know that with only 56 and a half acres of land, there won’t be an institution like Visva-Bharati. Nazrul University should consider for establishment of its second campus. We will always support Nazrul University’s progress and advancement.”
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Soumitra Sekhar highlighted the expansion of the campus and said “Historic Bichutia Bepari House is very close to our campus and Rafizullah Daroga House is also a little far away. Poet Nazrul spend time in these places which are now museums under the Ministry of Culture.”
The government should consider attaching these historic places to the Nazrul University campus, he suggested, adding that, this will ensure proper care of the historic places to revive the memory of the great poet and also enrich the university campus.
