Around 40 more members of the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) reportedly entered Bangladesh through the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar district on Saturday to take refuge amid the ongoing conflict between the Myanmar security forces and the rebel Arakan Army (AA).
The exact number of the BGP men could be ascertained after scrutiny. Local sources claimed the number to be 40, said Foreign Ministry’s
Myanmar Wing Director General Meah Md Mainul Kabir adding that the BGP men, with guns and ammunition, entered through three border points under the upazila.
They entered mostly through the Acharbunia and Nazirpara borders of village Sabrang under the upazila. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) took them into their custody after they surrendered, he added.
Including these BGP men, a total of 655 Myanmar nationals, including members of the BGP, their family members, army men, immigration staff, and civilians, entered Bangladesh through different borders so far.
A total of 615 of them have been repatriated by the government in two phases.
Mentionable, the conflict between the Myanmar security forces and the rebel AA, which intensified since 3 February, has caused mortar shells and bullets to encroach into Bangladesh territory, resulting in casualties and injuries.
In response to these challenges, the government has heightened the vigilance of BGB personnel to thwart any potential infiltration attempts across the Myanmar borders during the conflict.
Additional BGB forces have been deployed in border areas to closely monitor and manage the situation.
