Eleven new varieties of mango, developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), are winning farmers over in Sharsha upazila of Jashore as they promise higher profits and also gained popularity among consumers.
The advanced varieties of mangos containing plenty of vitamins can be found in the markets till the end of September. Besides, there are minerals, fibre, food power, protein, calcium, iron, carotene, vitamin B-2, sugar, etc.

A local farmer Noor Islam Sardar, son of late Naimuddin Sardar, of Pipragachi village in Sharsha upazila witnesses great favourable results after cultivating the advanced varieties of mangoes in recent years.
Noor Islam Sardar has been associated with nursery work for the past 23 years. At first, he worked as a labourer in different nurseries, then he built a fruit nursery on a piece of land beside his house. Being associated with the nursery, he used to collect newly developed fruit seedlings.
In 2018, He collected 11 new varieties of mango seedlings from the Bangladesh Mango Research Centre in Chapainawabganj. He produced 2,200 seedlings from the branches of trees produced in the first harvest from those collected seedlings. Later in 2019, he leased six bighas of land for ten years.

He planted his own produced mango saplings on a total of nine bighas of land, including three bighas of his own land and six bighas taken on lease. Among them, he planted Bari-11 on six bighas and Katiman mango on three bighas of land. After two years, the mango orchard started to bear fruit. He started collecting the mangos in April this year. Noor said that around 35 tonnes of mangoes were produced per bigha of land.
He is selling each kg of mango from the orchard at a rate of Tk400 as the sweet and delicious mangoes are loved by everyone. In the current season, Noor Islam is earning Tk 56,000 from one bigha land.
Mango traders from different parts of the country are collecting mangoes from him. He is also sending mangoes and mango seedlings through couriers.
Often visitors come from far places to witness his mango orchard after hearing the learning news about the sweet and delicious taste of the mangoes on TV and in newspapers.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Deepak Kumar said “I always look for the mango garden of Noor Islam, and advise him. Farmers like Noor Islam are our pride. If anyone wants to produce new fruits and crops, we will always support them.”
