Bashundhara Group steps forward to fulfil the dream of Apu Das, son of day labourer Asit Das, to become a doctor. A report under the headline “Poverty is the main barrier for Apu to become a doctor” was published in the Daily Kaler Kantho on 18 February.
Following the report, Kaler Kantho Editor Imdadul Haq Milan, also noted litterateur and founder of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, announced to shoulder Apu’s responsibility for paving his path. A Kaler Kantho delegation has recently visited Asit’s house at Baliadanga Khanpur village in Manirampur upazila of Jashore to convey the news.
Sensing the presence of unfamiliar faces, Apu emerged from their modest, tin-shed home. His father and mother were not at home. Apu’s parents came home after hearing the news of the visit of the Kaler Kantho delegation.
Apu’s face wore a grim expression at the time. Smiles adorned their faces as Bashundhara Group approached Apu’s parents to offer support for their son’s educational expenses.
Apu has been a very meritorious student since his childhood. He is very dedicated to his studies, and his parents bear his educational expenses with their hard-earned income. They have no land, no properties. Asit Das, who works as cobbler in Manirampur bazar, came to Baliadanga Khanpur village 40 years ago from Dumuria, Khulna, in search of work. At one stage, he got married to Sadhona Rani, and since then, he has been living there. Apu’s elder brother, Titas Das, is also a very meritorious student. He is currently pursuing an honours degree in political science at Keshabpur Government College.
Apu, with a smiling face, said that his dream of becoming a doctor almost came to an end, but Bashundhara extended support to help him chase his dream. “I desire to become a kind person and contribute to the betterment of others. May God help me,” he said, extending gratitude to Bashundhara Group.
