Some upazilas in the southern district of Patuakhali are inaccessible enough. There are some remote shoals in these inaccessible upazilas where one has to struggle to reach the spots. The state of education in these areas is miserable indeed!
As there is no ample opportunity to pursue education, the children in the region get themselves engaged in working at a tender age. At a certain stage, they employ themselves in full-time agricultural or fishing jobs like their parents. Fishing and agriculture are the common pursuits of most of the people in the area. Many people in the area live below the poverty level. In such a situation, they do not dare to think of sending their children to schools that are located in a little bit distant area. Considering the miserable condition of these people, who regularly struggle with nature, Bashundhara Group, the country's largest industrial conglomerate, has established schools in three remote shoals of Galachipa, Dashmina, and Rangabali upazilas.
The children, who did not even think of going to school once, are now attending school regularly. The entire shoal is now abuzz with the loud noise of children. Presently, around three hundred children read in Bashundhara Shuvosangho schools. Char Agosti village is situated southeast of Char Biswas union of Galachipa, on the bank of the Tentulia River. Ghasir Char is a major part of this village. Being located on the border of Rangabali and Galachipa upazilas, this part remains neglected.
About 300 families live here. Every day, the water rises and goes down due to the ebb and flow tide. Char Agosti village is full of natural beauty. Even one year ago, nothing was heard, but the shouting of farmers and fishermen. But the entire scenario changed following the establishment of ‘Bashundhara Shuvosangho School’.
Char Agosti Mujib Kella Bashundhara Shuvosangho School was constructed near the embankment. Every day, the red-green-white school building remains vibrant with the loud noise of over 300 students. After the establishment of Bashundhara Shuvosangho School, people from different areas come to visit the school daily to observe its educational activities.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho School stands high on this vast green shoal. The school is spreading the light of education among the children in the backward village. Local people give a strange look at the students coming from different directions wearing school dresses.
It was a distant dream for the villagers that the students of the isolated area would come to the school in this manner wearing shirts, pants, shoes and carrying school bags. Bashundhara Group has materialised their dream. As to why, local people express their sincere gratitude to the founders of Bashundhara Group.
Following the establishment of Dakkhin Char Agosti Bashundhara Shuvosangho School, local Member of Parliament (MP) SM Shahjada, Upazila Parishad Chairman Mohammad Shaheen, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mohiuddin Al Helal, Upazila Primary Education Officer Mir Mohammad Rezaul Islam and many others visited the school.
They welcomed the initiative of Bashundhara Shuvosangho duly assisted by Bashundhara Group. Everyone prayed for fast expansion of the initiatives of Bashundhara Group. They have opined that the marginalised families and their children are being benefited due to the welfare-oriented activities of the country's largest industrial conglomerate. It is Bashundhara Group that has taken the bold initiative. Best wishes to the Bashundhara Group family! Alkes Mridha, a farmer living at Ghasir Char under Dakkhin Char Agosti, said, “I’ve three children. I married off my eldest daughter. My second child, a son, reads in Class III. I have a four-and-a-half-year-old daughter. I have a desire to get this daughter admitted to Bashundhara Shuvosangho School. The school is located close to my house, which is my big advantage. Even though she’ll have to cross a bridge, still it will not be a problem. It is easier to cross a bridge than to travel a long distance.” “None gave shirts, pants, shoes and educational materials to the children of poor people like us. It’s only the Bashundhara Group that has given everything to them. When I look at the children of our village proceeding towards the school wearing school dresses and shoes and carrying bags, it gives me immense pleasure. It seems like a dream.”
