First Int’l Disability Art Festival begins in city on Friday

The first International Disability Art Festival in the country will begin at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka on Friday.
Drama troupe Dhaka Theatre and the British Council are jointly organising the two-day festival with the support of Sundaram and the Institute of Informatics and Development.
The festival will showcase a diverse range of events, including theatre shows, film screenings, exhibitions and seminars.
The details of the festival were disclosed at a press conference held at Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital on Sunday.
The festival director and president of Dhaka Theatre Nasir Uddin Yousuff briefed the details about the fest at the press conference.
British Council Bangladesh Programme director David Knox, IID chief executive director Syeed Ahamed and member secretary of the festival Wasim Ahmed, among others, were present on the occasion.
Approximately 240 disabled artistes will demonstrate their talents at the festival, showcasing the richness of their artistic expressions.
Nasir Uddin Yusuf said that this two-day long festival will start at 11am and continue till 8:30pm.
Nine branches of Sundaram from various regions of the country will present nine theatre productions, while Jana Sanskriti: Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed from India will stage a play as part of the festival's lineup.
Social Welfare Minister Dipu Moni will inaugurate the festival on Friday as the chief guest. Deputy high commissioner and development director of British High Commission in Dhaka Matt Cannell, artistic director of Graeae Theatre Company Jenny Sealey will also grace the occasion as the special guests.
Besides, State Minister for Cultural Affairs Naheed Ezaher Khan will attend the closing ceremony on 27 April at 8:00pm.
The festival will provide a platform for celebrating the creativity and talent of artists with disabilities while promoting inclusivity and awareness in the realm of arts and culture.
