Economist Anu Muhammad, also a former professor of economics at Jahangirnagar University, suffered injuries after the toes of his left leg were severed in a train accident in the capital’s Khilgaon area on Sunday.
The accident took place at around 11am on the day after he had slipped while getting off the slow-moving train after returning from Dinajpur, causing both his legs to come into contact with the wheels.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by his fellows with injuries to his legs, said Md Masud, assistant sub-inspector of the DMCH police outpost.
One Mahtab, who was with the professor during the accident, said, “Sir was returning from Phulbari in Dinajpur. He tried to get off the slow-moving train at Khilgaon Rail Crossing, but his leg went under the wheels of the train as it started moving again, and his toes were cut off.”
Head of the Burns and Plastic Surgery Department of DMCH, Prof Bidhan Sarker, who examines Anu Muhammad, said all the toes of his left leg were crushed, and they are impossible to repair. A toe on his right leg was also damaged.
He also said, “The tissue of his toes was damaged. Doctors wrapped the area in bandages. Surgeons from orthopedics, burn units, emergency departments, and general practitioners are now caring for him. The DMCH will form a medical council to decide the next course of treatment.”
Moshhita Sultana, an accounting lecturer at Dhaka University, told the media that the former member secretary of the National Committee for the Protection of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Energy, and Ports had gone to Dinajpur to attend a commemorative meeting.
