Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said on Tuesday that experienced opener Tamim Iqbal has requested some time to make up his mind regarding making a national comeback.
Najmul sat with Tamim on Monday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium to talk about his international future that has been hanging for quite some time.
Tamim, who retired from T20Is, is currently available for the other two formats but taking his age and fitness into consideration, a Test return looks highly unlikely.
“We just chatted and spoke about cricket…It is difficult to say clearly at the moment because it is a matter of time and he asked for some time and probably will think about it,” Najmul told reporters during a private programme.
“Let the DPL end. I have to think about it as well.
“Though he has retired from the T20Is, we would be happy if he returns to any format…,” he added.
Najmul said that he is not very keen to make a big statement before going to the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup while adding that he would prefer the expectation to not be that high.
“Every year I see before the World Cup there are lots of talks about our goal and we want to do this and that. I am requesting that we don’t need to have expectations. Let it remain in our hearts,” said Najmul.
“All I can say is that those who will be playing in the team will give 120 percent and I can guarantee that, and we will go for a win. Every year when we play, we play with a lot of hope but there is no need to have all those hopes and goals from a very early stage,” he said.
Meanwhile, Najmul added that Mustafizur Rahman does not lack commitment to the national team, after questions were raised recently, suggesting that the left-arm pacer keeps his best for the IPL.
The left-arm pacer made a flying start to his Chennai Super Kings stint this season, picking up 10 wickets in five matches, though in the recent past, his place in the national playing XI came under scrutiny for failing to deliver as per expectation.
“What I want to say is when Mustafizur plays for the national team, his desire is much bigger. He is playing in a foreign league (IPL) and he certainly has a commitment to his team and he is showing that,” said Najmul.
“When he plays for Bangladesh he thinks about every ball and sees how it can help the team. A lot of people are saying this (Fizz is more committed to the IPL than to the national team) but I want to say clearly that I have seen him closely in a couple of games as I was the captain. He gives a lot of importance to every ball, and there is no lack of commitment like he is playing in a relaxed mood in Bangladesh team,” he concluded.
