A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official said on Thursday that top-order batter Soumya Sarkar will miss the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL) due to an injury.
Soumya sustained the injury during the third ODI match against Sri Lanka in Chattogram on 18 March when he crashed into the boundary board in the 49th over of the Sri Lanka innings to save a four.
Soumya injured his left knee along with suffering a neck injury that forced team management to open the innings with Tanzid Hasan as the concussion replacement for Soumya during their chase against the visitors.
“He (Soumya) is unlikely to take part in the ongoing DPL as his injury will take around six weeks to heal,” a BCB physician told the Daily Sun on Thursday.
The BCB physician further said that Soumya will race against time to make him available for the home series against Zimbabwe.
“I think it will be tough for him to make him available for the home series against Zimbabwe as he is expected to perform both with bat and ball and to get ready to do that, he will certainly take some time because he is expected to start his batting initially and later will start his bowling,” he added.
Bangladesh will host Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series in May, eyeing on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held on 1-29 June in United States and West Indies.
The first three T20Is, which will begin from 3 May, will be played in Chattogram, while the last two matches will be held in Dhaka.
