A Dhaka court on Thursday denied bail to The Daily Star Executive Editor Syed Ashfaqul Haque and his wife Tania Khondoker in a case filed over the death of teenage domestic help Preeti Urang at their residence.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Assam Jaglul Hossain passed the order after hearing a bail petition.
The couple's lawyers pleaded for bail on any condition, while the prosecution opposed the bail pleas. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition.
Preeti Urang, 15, from Mirtinga village in Moulvibazar's Kamalganj upazila, died after falling from the 7th-floor residence of Syed Ashfaq in Mohammadpur, Dhaka on 6 February.
Her father, Lokesh Urang, filed a case at Mohammadpur police station on negligence charge the following day.
In the case statement, he said his daughter was sent to Dhaka two years ago to work as a domestic help, aiming to alleviate their family's financial struggles.
Throughout this period, Preeti Urang, a member of the ethnic Urang community, never visited her family with Lokesh relying on occasional phone calls to the house owner to stay in touch.
Police first detained Syed Ashfaq and his wife Tania over the death of the domestic help. Later, they were shown arrested in the case.
The couple was first interrogated at the jail gate over the incident following a court order. Later, they were placed on a four-day remand.
Preeti Urang's death was surrounded by mystery as another domestic help, Ferdausi, fell from the balcony of Syed Ashfaq's house in the same manner on 6 August 2023, leaving her seriously injured.
Although a case was filed over the incident, a Dhaka court has recently acquitted the couple in the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zaki Al Farabi passed the order on 19 February after accepting the final report submitted by police in the case.
