The government will bring significant changes to curb environmental pollution in the next five years, said Tanvir Shakil Joy, a lawmaker and member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
He made this remark while speaking at a stakeholder hearing on saving the life of the elderly and young children through mitigation of air pollution and ensuring ‘Fresh Air for Breathing’. The event was jointly organised by the Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS), World Vision Bangladesh and Shishu & Youth Forum at the seminar room of Press Institute Bangladesh.
“The current government, especially the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, is doing a lot of work to prevent environmental pollution,” he said.
“Air pollution cannot be prevented by just sprinkling water. This is a temporary solution. In order to prevent air pollution, waste should be converted into assets that have monetary value,” said Joy.
Chairman of CAPS Professor Dr. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, also the chairman of the Department of Environment at Stamford University, said, “Clean air is the right of people, but the residents of Dhaka city are deprived of it.”
“The burning of biofuels is releasing toxic gases into the air which is degrading the air quality. So, if fossil fuels are phased out and renewable are ensured, clean air and fuel security will be ensured for all,” he said.
