Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Saturday that they have dropped Liton Kumar Das for Tigers’ upcoming third ODI against Sri Lanka.
Uncapped Jaker Ali has been included for the series-decider which is scheduled to be held at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Monday.
Hosts Bangladesh made a winning start in the three-match ODI series with a six-wicket victory but the tourists leveled the series by winning the second match by three-wicket.
It is the first time that Liton has lost his place since 2021 when he was dropped for a T20I series against Pakistan.
Liton failed to open his account in the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka while he also failed to impress in the T20I series against the same opponents, scoring 0, 36 and 7 respectively in the three matches.
Liton, who scored just 313 runs in 14 ODIs at an average of 24.07, crossed the 50-run mark just twice from the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup while he is without any fifty for the last 10 innings.
The right-handed batsman was informed by BCB’s chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu about the decision of keeping him out from the last ODIs unlike the past when learnt about his exclusion from the media.
Liton left the team hotel along with his family on Saturday after being released from the squad on advice from the team management to play in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL) where he will feature for defending champions Abahani Limited.
“As the series was going on, there weren't many chances for changes. However, we are no longer keeping Liton in this squad as he is inconsistent with the new ball,” Ashraf said regarding the exclusion of Liton on Saturday.
“All of you know that Anamul Haque Bijoy and Tanzid Hasan Tamim are already with the team as openers apart from Liton while Soumya Sarkar is another opener. We didn't naturally feel any other new opener in the place of Liton because there are already two options out of which our captain and coach have to choose one. We have definitely taken the opinions of the coach and captain in this selection process,” he added.
Liton has been replaced by wicketkeeper-batter Jaker Ali, who scored an impressive 68 in the first T20I against Sri Lanka. He has 84 List A appearances and has racked up 1918 runs at an average of 34.87.
“We have found if we can include someone in the middle order instead of Liton as there is a gap. We think about wicket-keeper batter Jaker Ali as he would fit there,” said Ashraf.
“He (Jaker) has played white-ball T20 and scored runs. Now, he is getting runs in the Premier League. He can play in multiple positions, can play at the top or can do finishing duties,” he further added.
“There is a risk of concussion in cricket nowadays and therefore, as an extra precaution, we think that the team management should include Jaker in the place of Liton, so that there will be a balance in the team because the third match is not the day/night match,” he concluded.
