The government should introduce training programme for women entrepreneurs apart from policy support to promote the jewellery industry, experts said.

They laid emphasis on economic empowerment of women through jewellery sector while addressing a discussion on ‘Role of women entrepreneurs in the development of jewellery industry’ arranged by Bangladesh Jeweller's Association (BAJUS) on Friday.

The trade body organised the event at its head office at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in the capital marking International Women’s Day.
Addressing the programme, BAJUS former president Dilip Kumar Roy said that the country will move forward when men and women work together.

“Women should be encouraged to work and working environment for women should be created. Only then women can move forward,” he said.
BAJUS leaders also mentioned that women entrepreneurs should come forward to reduce disparity in jewellery industry.

“There is no equality in this sector. Women should be included everywhere. A safe working environment should be created for women. Women should be made interested in this sector,” they said.
Women lag behind in the workplace despite being equal to men in terms of qualifications, they added.

Farida Hossain, chairman, Bajus Standing Committee on Women Affairs, presided over the session while member secretary Selima Akhter, members Mehjabin Morshed and Sonaly Sobnom spoke on the occasion.
BAJUS Media Communication Specialist Rashed Rahman Amit conducted the discussion.
