Pressure of repaying foreign loans manageable

Says finance minister at a briefing

Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali said the government has some pressure to repay the foreign loans but the situation is not concerning.
He made these comments during a press briefing at his office in Dhaka following a meeting with a delegation from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The finance minister addressed concerns about growing foreign loans, noting that “while there is some pressure, it is not overwhelming.”
He emphasised that the government is actively managing the situation to maintain stability.
The minister reiterated the government's commitment to fostering positive economic indicators despite challenges, emphasising the need for sustained progress.
Regarding efforts to control essential commodity prices and macroeconomic indicators, he acknowledged progress in some areas while highlighting ongoing challenges.
Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali emphasised the need for patience and cautioned against forced measures that may disrupt the market.
In preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, he mentioned about the proactive opening of letter of credit (LC) to ensure normal stock and supply of essential items.
He called for patience from the public in this regard.
Reflecting on Bangladesh's partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the finance minister highlighted the significant investment of $2 billion in Bangladesh's agricultural sector.
He highlighted the positive outcomes and future growth potential.
The minister also cited IFAD's support in initiatives such as breeding Rui Minnow fish in the River Halda, which has yielded promising results through community engagement and pollution prevention efforts.
