An unidentified body, wearing a helmet and gloves, was recovered in a canal in Ukhiya upazila, Cox’s Bazar on Sunday afternoon.
Sources suggest the deceased may have been a Myanmar security personnel or a member of the rebel Arakan Army (AA).
The body was found floating in the Telipara Khal, which connects to the Naf River, in the Balukhali area of Ukhiya upazila.
Locals notified the police through the national emergency number 999. Upon receiving the information, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shamim Hossain of Ukhiya police station confirmed that the police recovered the body.
Efforts are underway to identify the deceased, according to OC Shamim Hossain.
Earlier, another unidentified man’s body was recovered from the Rahamater Beel area within the same upazila on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, although the situation seemed relatively normal on Saturday, reports of gunshots and mortar explosions emerged from the Lomba Beel, Unchiprang, and Kanjor Para frontiers in Teknaf upazila.
Myanmar nationals, predominantly Rohingyas, were allegedly seen navigating boats in various areas of the Naf River with the intention to enter Bangladesh. However, due to stringent vigilance, they were unable to cross during daylight hours, as per sources.
The conflict between Myanmar security personnel and the AA has intensified since 3 February, resulting in mortar shells and bullets crossing into Bangladesh territory. Tragically, two individuals, including a woman and a Rohingya, lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries.
Hundreds of people from the Chakma, Rohingya, and other communities have reportedly gathered at different frontiers, potentially seeking entry into Bangladesh.
In response, the government has placed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members on high alert to thwart any infiltration attempts through the Myanmar borders during the ongoing conflict. Additional BGB personnel have been deployed in border areas to closely monitor the situation.
