An unexploded mortar shell fired from Myanmar landed in the Konarpara area of Ghumdhum border (Bangladesh–Myanmar) on Tuesday night.
Panic ensues among the locals while one leaves the house without necessity. Intense fighting has been going on near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border at Naikhongchhari in Bandarban for around ten days.
It is unclear who the involved parties are but locals say they believe separatists are fighting against the junta.

Bandarban’s deputy commissioner, police chief, Naikhongchhari upazila executive officer as well as
senior Border Guard Bangladesh BGB officers have visited the site.

“The locals heard the sound of 18 mortar shell explosions yesterday across the border. People are afraid, but there is no reason to fear because the members of the 34 BGB are on maximum alert at the border. Apart from this, the police and upazila administration are maintaining constant vigilance,” said Bandarban DC Shah Mujahid Uddin.

Jahangir Aziz, chairman of Ghumdhum Union, said, “We are in fear, we don’t know what will happen. Locals are being warned not to go out of their homes unnecessarily.”
Meanwhile, a special patrol team from the Ghumdhum Baish outpost pushed back, detaining three Myanmar tribesmen during an illegal incursion on Wednesday (31 January) morning, two hours later.
BGB arrested them from the area adjacent to the Mogpara Bridge inside Bangladesh, near Pillar No. 37 of the border under BGB. They are said to be residents of Maungdaw district in Myanmar.
Later, on the instructions of BGB senior authorities, the three were pushed back inside Myanmar.
