Physically challenged motorised rickshaw drivers from Karail slum staged a demonstration in front of Gulshan-2 Nagar Bhaban in the capital on Monday demanding that they be allowed to ply their vehicles in the Gulshan-Banani neighbourhood.
Under the banner of Karail Protibondhi Unnayan Sangstha, people with wheelchairs and crutches gathered in front of Nagar Bhaban around 1:00 pm and demanded to meet DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam to put forward their demands.
They said more than 90 disabled people operate engine-powered rickshaws in Mohakhali and Karail area, but they cannot enter the area for not having stickers.
President of Karail Protibondhi Unnayan Sangstha Afsar Ali said, “Since the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, street vendors and beggars were banned and rickshaw pullers in Gulshan Banani are required to have stickers from Banani Society to avoid police harassment. As many of our members who were beggars and hawkers lost jobs, we demanded that the then DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq should give stickers to 200 such people.” The mayor, however, died before handing over the 200 stickers.
He claimed that after the death of Annisul, some leaders of Banani Society and rickshaw owners took a huge amount of money promising to provide them with stickers, but they failed to do so.
