Awami League (AL) candidate Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi was elected unofficially to the Kishoreganj-1 parliamentary seat as she defeated her elder brother independent candidate Syed Shafayetul Islam in the election race.
She got 77,162 votes and her elder brother and closest competitor independent candidate of the eagle symbol Syed Shafayetul Islam got 74,162 votes.
Returning Officer and Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad announced the unofficial results of the polls.
Earlier, the voting of the 12th parliamentary polls was held from 8am to 4 pm on Sunday although the main opposition BNP refused to participate.
The total of 5,13, 978 voters, including men and women have exercised their franchises in 174 polling stations in Kishoreganj-1 (Sadar-Hossainpur upazila) on Sunday. The Kishoreganj-1 parliamentary seat was previously represented by her brother late public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam.
After his death, Zakia Noor Lipi has been elected to this seat. They are the children of Syed Nazrul Islam, the acting president of Bangladesh during the Liberation War and one of the four national leaders of the country.
Late Syed Ashraf served five consecutive terms as MP for this constituency. Zakia Noor, younger sister of Syed Ashraf, is a doctor.
