Fresh wind blows through 12th parliament as a third debut

Brace yourselves for a youthful parliament as nearly one-third of the seats in the 12th parliament will be occupied by fresh faces for the first time.
As many as 90 newly-elected members of parliament (MPs), the majority of them independent candidates, will take their oath. While independents cruised to victory in a majority of these new seats, the ruling Awami League (AL) will get 43 new members who have secured their maiden win with the boat symbol for the first time.

There are seven new faces in the Mymensingh district, nine in the Dhaka district, seven in the Chattogram district and six in the Cumilla district.
Political analysts said competitive polls and the participation of many independent candidates are the main reasons for getting so many new faces in the parliament.

Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan became the new MP from the Magura-1 seat by winning the election by a huge margin. Shakib secured 78, 865 votes while his closest rival Advocate Kazi Rezaul bagged 2,855 votes.

Independent candidate Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon has become the new lawmaker in Habiganj-4 constituency by defeating Md Mahbub Ali, the state minister for civil aviation and tourism. Sumon got 1,98,000 votes while his nearest rival Mahbub Ali polled 47,000 votes with the boat symbol.

Popular actor Ferdous Ahmed has become a lawmaker for the first time from the Dhaka-10 seat with the “boat” symbol.

In the Dhaka-4 constituency, Dr Awlad Hossain, former personal secretary of AL President Sheikh Hasina, became an MP for the first time after defeating AL candidate Sanjida Khanom.

In Dhaka-6, former mayor of Dhaka South and AL Central Member Sayeed Khokon has become a lawmaker for the first time. Former MP Haji Selim’s son Solaiman Selim has become a first-time MP from Dhaka-7.

In Dhaka-14, Bangladesh Awami Juba League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil will be sworn in as a new lawmaker, marking his first entry into the legislative body.
In Dhaka-18, independent candidate Dhaka North AL Industry and Commerce Secretary Khasru Chowdhury will begin his inaugural term as a representative in the legislature. He has defeated Jatiya Party candidate Sherifa Quader.

Apart from them, Moshiur Rahman Molla Sajal, an independent candidate from Dhaka-5, Muhammad Saiful Islam, an independent candidate from Dhaka-19, and Mohammad Wakil Uddin, an AL candidate from Dhaka-11, will enter the parliament for the first time. Many central AL leaders have also secured their seats in the parliament for the first time. For example, the five-time organising secretary of the AL Ahmed Hossain will take the oath as a lawmaker for the first time from the Netrakona-5 constituency.

Director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and AL Organising Secretary Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel from Moulovibazar-2 seat will assume his first term as a lawmaker.
AL Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Abdus Sabur will have his inauguration in the parliament from the Cumilla-1 constituency. From the Mymensingh-4 constituency, AL’s Mohammad Mohit Ur Rahman will commence his inaugural term as a lawmaker.

In the Mymensingh-8 constituency, Mahmud Hasan Sumon of the truck symbol was elected for the first time by defeating his nearest rival Jatiya Party’s Fakhrul Imam.
In Jamalpur-5 constituency, AL candidate former principal secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad will embark on his first as an MP.

In the Kushtia-2 constituency, independent Kamarul Arefin, with the truck symbol, defeated Jatiya Samaj Tantrik Dal President Hasanul Haque Inu (Boat) and will assume his duty as a lawmaker for the first time.

In Rajshahi-2, Shafiqur Rahman Badsha won the seat as an independent candidate by defeating Fazle Hossain Badsha who contested as a candidate of the 14-party alliance with the boat symbol.

Other new lawmakers who will make their first entry into the parliament include Tahmina Begum from Madaripur-3, Md Abdur Rashid from Jamalpur-4, Md Abul Kalam from Jamalpur-5, Md Chanuar Hossain Chanu from Sherpur-1, ADM Shahidul Islam from Sherpur-3, Mahmudul Haque Sayem from Mymensingh-1, Md Nazrul Islam from Mymensingh-5, Md Abdul Malek Sarkar from Mymensingh-6, ABM Anishuzzaman from Mymensingh-7, Mohammad Abdul Waheed from Mymensingh-11, Md Kamarul Arefin from Kushtia-2, Md Nasser Shahriar Zahedi from Jhenaidah-2, Md Salah Uddin Miyaji from Jhenaidah-3, Md Touhidujzaman from Jashore-2, Enamul Haque Babul from Jashore-4, Md Yakub Ali from Jashore-5, Md Azizul Islam from Jashore-6, HM Badiuzzaman from Bagerhat-4, SM Kamal Hossain from Khulna-3, Feroze Ahmed Swapan from Satkhira-1, Md Ashrafuzzaman from Satkhira-2, SM Ataul Haque from Satkhira-4, Md Moin Uddin from Brahmanbaria-2, Faizur Rahman from Brahmanbaria-5, Salim Mahmud from Chandpur-1 and Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury from Feni-1.
