Two independent candidates in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon constituency have boycotted the election alleging vote rigging and irregularities.
The independent candidates are Abul Hossain Dipu with the eagle symbol and Kaiser Ahmed with the truck symbol.
They said they boycotted the voting as the polling agents of most of the polling centres in 15 unions and municipal areas of the upazila were forced out of the polling centres.
Vote rigging and irregularities allegations were brought against the presiding officer, assistant presiding officer and polling agent at Madinatul Ulum Qawmi Madrasa Centre in the municipality town of the upazila.
Presiding officer Ilias Uddin, assistant presiding officer Nurul Haq and polling agent Abul Kalam were detained following the allegations, said Returning Officer Didar Alam Mohammad Maksud Chowdhury.
Denying various allegations, Awami League candidate Fahmi Golandaj Babel said, “People rejected them. Realising defeat, the independent candidates boycotted the vote to question the election.”
A total of 72 candidates are contesting for 11 seats in the district.
