Additional deputy inspector general of police Hamidul Alam was suspended for campaigning in the 12th parliamentary election in favour of his wife Sahajadi Alam Lipi, an independent candidate for Bogura-1 in violation of the electoral code of conduct.
The home ministry on Thursday published a gadget notification in this regard. Hamidul Alam, posted at the Barishal Metropolitan Police as an additional commissioner, is now attached to the police headquarters.
Earlier, on December 31, the Public Security Department of Home Ministry had written to the Election Commission seeking the consent of the Election Commission. On Wednesday, the no-objection letter signed by Election Commission Deputy Secretary Mizanur Rahman was sent to the senior secretary of the Public Security Department of the Home Ministry to temporarily suspend Hamidul Alam from his job and attach him to the police department. Police officer Hamidul’s wife Shahajadi Alam Lipi is contesting as an independent candidate on the Tabla symbol in the Bogura-1 constituency.
It was alleged that Additional Commissioner of Police Hamidul Alam, despite being a government official, took one month’s leave from his job and went to Bogura to conduct election campaigns on behalf of his wife.
