Candidates of Awami League, National People's Party (NPP) and Trinomool Bangladesh National Party Bangladesh (Trinamool BNP) have echoed on importance of fair and credible election to develop a peaceful Bangladesh while appearing a debate show at a private television channel.
They each voiced their views on the prospects of young voters, the various constituencies and promised solutions. Three candidates are contesting in Dhaka-8 constituency. Politician AFM Bahauddin Nasim of Awami League, NPP candidate Abul Kalam Jewel and Trinamool BNP candidate M A Yusuff took part in the debate titled ‘Torke Bitorke Nirbachon’.
Abul Kalam Jewel of NPP said, The National People's Party (NPP) is a political party. Our main aim is to establish ourselves as a national alternative force based on the spirit of liberation war, nationalism and religious values.
He said, elections are actually a means of changing power. We want to form the government through democratic process. This is our main theme. People still do not have 100% confidence in this election or in the government. There is an opportunity to change the government through elections.
Abul Kalam Jewel claimed, the government could not unite all the political parties we think this is a failure of the present government. The Chief Election Commissioner says there will be a fair election in the country. But we want the assurance of how healthy the election will be. We want the assurance of voting. We know that for many days we are in fear of being able to vote. People are not assured of being able to vote. We want that assurance and assurance of being able to vote.
He said, Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party were in state power since independence. Those over the age of fifty have come to realize these parties have seen their regimes. In that case, young voters will play an important role in this election. We have seen interest in voting among young voters. I believe new voters will vote this time. We have seen during the mass communication that there is interest in voting among the youth. Youth are encouraged to vote. Same is the case with women. Outside of the youth I think everyone are victims. I think all the three parties have run the country in the same way every time they were in power. In the same vein they used state power.
‘Dhaka-8 Constituency can be called the capital of Dhaka. There are many problems in this asana, which are very important to solve. There are many floating people in Dhaka-8 area. It is a social decadence. One of the problems of this constituency is the problem of sidewalk hawkers. As the state cannot guarantee employment, many are self-employed as sidewalk hawkers.
But the past three governments could not solve their problems. The current mayor is working on a solution to this problem, but it has not been solved. Walkways should be provided. But hawkers must be rehabilitated. Notre Dame College, Vikarunnessa Noon School and College, such reputed schools are of interest to all. But we want to create one quality educational institution in each ward’.
‘Like other places in Dhaka, traffic congestion is a problem for this constituency. There was anarchy in bus traffic. It has to be solved. Earlier, the bus counter was constructed on the main road. We want to thank the present government; they have been able to raise these counters.’
Jewel said, the nation is now looking towards elections. How to choose, whether to choose at all! The matter is now questionable to many. We want to say, everyone come to the polling station, cast your vote for whoever you want. My point is, if you want change, you have to change through elections. Mango is our election symbol. We appeal to everyone, by voting for Aam Marka, give a chance for change in the governance of the country.
‘Finally, we would like to invite everyone to come to the polling station. The current Election Commission has promised fair elections. We also want this election to be fair. We want a fair election.’
M A Yusuf of Trinamool BNP claimed, Commodity prices are beyond people's purchasing power. Here lies the failure of the government. The government is not able to control the commodity price, the syndicate is not able to control. Sometimes onion, sometimes sugar, sometimes oil, the price of each item is being increased by syndicating like this. The government has tried several times to control syndicates but has not been successful. International factors and the dollar crisis remain a factor in this. Due to various reasons, the revenue hope has decreased in the country. Due to this reason dollar crisis has also appeared.
He said, we fear political violence, centered on elections. Wherever we are doing mass communication, we have seen apprehension among the common people about being able to vote. Their statement is, can we vote for ourselves? People want to vote, but their fear is whether they can vote themselves. I have seen many of them saying that the voting has already been done, it has already been decided who will win.
‘Youths are averse to politics. Because since independence these 53 years of politics have been corrupt. Young people now want to migrate abroad whenever they get an opportunity. Because there are few employment opportunities in the country. If you want to get a job, you have to pay bribe, there is corruption. A large group of youth are unemployed. That is why they are frustrated.’
He said, I have a proposal on women and youth, we should form a ‘Ucchokokkha’ in our national parliament. There will be representatives of women and youth, representatives of professionals. We would like to make these structural changes if elected, as well as major political reforms. We want radical change in politics.
‘The problem of traffic congestion in Dhaka-8 constituencies is evident. The sidewalks are occupied by hawkers, there is no walking atmosphere. Metrorail has happened, but it will benefit only a handful of people. Most people will not benefit. Hawkers should be eradicated; such businesses should be decentralized. Alternative employment should be arranged. Extortion is a big problem in Dhaka.
One must stop.’
He also claimed, many countries in the world have provincial governments. There are employment opportunities in the province, industrial zones are developing. In our country too, like the provincial government system, province-wise development should be done. Branch offices of all important government departments should be opened in different regions. Then the number of people coming to Dhaka will decrease. It will be easy to make a new plan for Dhaka.
‘We invite everyone to come to the polling station. Our party Trinamool BNP, our election symbol is golden scales. We invite everyone to come to the polling booths and express no confidence in this government by voting. We will always be there to solve your problems.’
A H M Bahauddin Nasim of AL said, Progress in commodity prices is a definite problem. It is the same for Bangladesh as it is for any country around the world. Ukraine is one of the reasons for the increase in the price of Russian war goods. Due to this war, the import processes were disrupted, which led to an increase in commodity prices.
He said, This is not only a problem of Bangladesh; it is a global problem. Like the people of other countries, the people of Bangladesh have to suffer in this regard. We certainly feel this human suffering. As political workers we are exempted from people's suffering. My party leader Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina has repeatedly said that we are sincerely trying to overcome this crisis, so that the suffering of the people, especially the people of the grassroots and the working people of the lower class, can be removed soon. Various measures have already been taken for this. People should also come forward responsibly in this matter.
‘12th parliamentary elections are going to be held in Bangladesh with great enthusiasm and people's participation. We are getting massive response from people. Festival elections are going to be held in Bangladesh now. There is a group or few political parties against it; who are controlled by sectarian terrorist groups. The government will be elected in a democratic process. Those who do not respect the democratic process, as well as those who cannot win elections, those who have harmed the country, committed corruption, nepotism, plunder, are now afraid to face the people. For these reasons, they do not come to the election.’
He said, We clearly understand that the judgment of the youth will come against those who distorted history, destroyed the spirit of the liberation war, destroyed values, and divided Bangladesh by creating communal politics. They will be considered as the most important controller in this election. The youth will bring the vote this time. Awami League President Bangabandhu's daughter Deshratna is the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who symbolizes women's empowerment, women's awakening in all fields. We believe that for a nation to progress, women must step forward. Women's participation in elections is always spontaneous. They go to the polling station. Their enthusiasm, interest, in one word unique.
‘Dhaka-8 is the capital’s market, we want to make it smart. I am trying to understand their problems by mixing with the people of this area. As far as I understand from their facial language, eye language, body language, people want a beautiful cover.’
He also said, famous schools of Dhaka are located in this area. Starting from the admission war in these educational institutions, there are various problems surrounding the educational institutions. I believe these problems can be solved through community consultation and social action.
‘Our country's manpower is our country's wealth. We never see population as a problem. Our Father of the Nation said if population can be utilized, our country will progress. Our current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is moving in that direction. The youth of our country is being developed as a skilled manpower.’
He said, At January 7, people of Bangladesh will vote against them, those who want to destroy the spirit of the liberation war, who killed the father of the nation in his own family. People will vote with enthusiasm, people will vote against terrorism, people will vote against anarchy. People will vote against those who do not respect democracy. I am the nominated candidate of Awami League from Dhaka-8 Constituency, I will try to fulfill the needs of the people of Dhaka 8 Constituency as the nominated candidate of Bangabandhu and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. If elected I will work to improve the quality of life in this area. I will work to solve social problems. I will coordinate with the City Corporation to ensure that all people get civic benefits.
‘Our government is always working for the welfare of the people of the whole country and will continue to do so in the future. And to protect Bangladesh from those who want to destroy the spirit of the liberation war through the politics of terror, communal politics, go to the polling station on January 7, vote for me and Bangladesh Awami by voting on the flag of the Father of the Nation, the flag of the spirit of the liberation war, the flag of Sheikh Hasina, the beloved flag of the people of Bengal. Help make the future Bangladesh a Smart Bangladesh by winning the league.’
