Minister’s name surfaces in mysterious land grab

A mysterious signboard on a piece of land in Nawra area of Rupganj, Narayanganj has ignited a wave of curiosity among the local residents. People of the area have been asking “Who is the owner of the signboard of Bismillah Marine Service Limited?”
The signboard was installed on the 19-katha plot – repotedly gifted to an influential minister by Rongdhanu Group Chairman Rafiqul Islam – on 30 December at around 3pm by three individuals. However, due to the dispute over the ownership of the land, section 145 was in force there, said sources.
The registration number of the “police protocol car” used at that time was Dhaka Metro-Tha-13-5802.

When the locals asked the people who set up the signboard about their identity, one of them identified himself as the minister’s driver and another as his gunman.
Even before the Bismillah Marine Service’s signboard was put up, there was a signboard containing a court order regarding the land.

When contacted, Bismillah Marine Service General Manager Nur Uddin also said a minister from Chattogram and his wife are the directors of the company.
Local people have been criticising the use of a government vehicle and activities of government officials there despite the court order. They said there were reports about a minister's involvement in land business with a local group. However, that minister is not from Narayanganj, and not even from Dhaka division.

Sources said the influential minister was from Chattogram. The news of the minister’s involvement in land business with a controversial local person came to light due to the incident of the installation of signboards. Locals were shocked by the use of the minister’s name in the land business.

People concerned said that when the country is busy with the elections, a quarter is looking for opportunities. Taking advantage of the busyness regarding the polls, they are running their activities with the government officials, disregarding the court. The minister is advancing his own agendas amid the hustle-bustle of the national polls.
The land in Nawra area belongs to a local resident named Hossain Member. Currently, his five children possess the land. A few months ago, they put up a six-foot-high boundary wall on the land. Suddenly, a signboard using the name of the minister was hung on that land, causing a huge reaction among the locals.
