Bangladesh Premier League champions Bashundhara Kings lock horns Maldives’ Dhivehi Premier League club Maziya Sports and Recreation Club in the opening match of the ongoing AFC Cup 2023 four-team Group D today.

The match will be held at the National Stadium in Male at 04:00 pm (BST).

Kings’ Spanish head coach Oscar Bruzon confidently said that his side were fully prepared to give their best in order to win their first match against the hosts.

“Our rivals (Maziya SRC) have the home advantage, a good batch of young and senior players and the best Maldives (national team) performers so we have to deliver at our best in order to win the match,” he said.

“We will give continuity to the game idea we used in the last part of the Bangladesh Premier League and also against Sharjah Football Club (in AFC Champions League qualifying play-off),” he added.

Indian Super Cup 2023 champions Odisha Football Club and play-off winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant will lock horns in the day’s other match of this group.

The match will be held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India at 8 pm (BST).

Before leaving Dhaka on Sunday, Oscar Bruzon expressed his optimism of ending this competition on a high note.

While asked again his aim in this edition of AFC Cup, he replied, “Mohun Bagan are the favorite team on paper in this group, they will surely be the team to beat for that purpose.”

“It won’t be an easy task but we have a strong belief in our boys to try to make it possible and achievable,” the Spaniard added.

Kings earlier beat the Maldivian outfit under Oscar in the previous two editions of AFC Cup.

The BPL champions won the first game by 2-0 in Maldives in the 2021 edition and the second game by 1-0 in Kolkata in the 2022 edition.

Maziya’s Bosnian head Coach Milomir Seslija also said that his team were well-prepared for the match.

“We are prepared for the game well. We are not only representing Maziya. We are representing the nation as well,” he said.
