Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Monday said the election commission is monitoring the election environment ahead of the 12th National Parliamentary Election.

“We will continue to monitor the election environment. The election commission will take action, if the work of any District Commissioner is biased,” Kazi Habibul Awal said

The CEC made the comment in response to questions from journalists in front of the Election Commission in the capital’s Agargaon area.

Kazi Habibul Awal also mentioned that action will be taken if the behaviour of returning officers or officers involved in polling is biased.

About withdrawal of the DC of Jamalpur recently, the CEC said the EC requested the cabinet secretary to withdraw him.

“All the district commissioners have been asked to stay alert. This has been done in the interest and trust of election, people, and government,” he said.

Habibul Awal said, “There is no bar in writing the letter before the announcement of the schedule. The commission has jurisdiction. There are specifics after the schedule is announced”.

“If something happens even before the schedule that raises controversy over the credibility of the election, the confidence of the government and the EC, the impartiality of those conducting the election; Then the EC must bring it to the attention of the government,” he said.

The next parliamentary election is likely to take place in the first week of January next year.
