Govt to review bond interest rate

Expatriates' Welfare Minister Imran Ahmad has supported the demand of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) to increase interest rate for investment in bond.

He said the government could revise the rates in the current context.

"The government gives 3 percent retun for investment in bond when the global rate was below 1 percent. Now the on-avarage rate is 6 percent in international market. We can revise the rates in current context," Imran Ahmad told a conference of Non-resident Bangladeshis (NRB) as chief guest at InterContinental Dhaka on Sunday.

NRB CIP Association organised the third edition of Global Business Summit Dhaka.

Planning Minister MA Mannan and State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman were special guests on the occasion.

Saudi ambassador Essa Yousef Essa Al Duhailan and UAE ambassador Abdulla Ali AlHmoudi were  guests of honour on the occasion.

NRB CIP Association president Mohammed Mahtabur Rahman chaired over the session.

In his speech, Mohammed Mahtabur Rahman mentioned that the NRBs are facing harassment in different offices of the government to recieve service.

"We love our country. NRB wants to invest in Bangladesh. The government should set up special economic zones for the NRB to generate more employments," he said.

Later, Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Abu Farah Md. Nasser, FBCCI former president Jashim Uddin, Rupayan Group co-chairman  Mahir Ali Khan Ratul and HSBC Bangladesh chief executive officer Mahbub ur Rahman spoke on the occasion. Jatiya Press Club general secretary Shyamal Dutta moderated a panel discussion.
