Speakers at a programme on Saturday said it is not possible for the country to build an unbiased society without active participation of women in development works.

Keeping them aloof from development works will be suicidal for building a balanced society, they said.

They made the remark at a dialogue on women empowerment held at Khulna Press Club in the city. Executive Director of Sundarban Academy, Khulna Prof Anwarul Quadir moderated the function.

The speakers stressed the need for building a discrimination-free society through strengthening grassroots level women leadership.

Empowerment does not mean that they would exercise power without any commitment to the welfare of the people. Women must be industrious and courageous to establish their rights in a male-dominated society, they said.

Speakers further said, “All big achievements of the country will prove futile if the condition of general women doesn’t improve.”

They called upon the grassroots level women leaders to work together for bringing an end to all sorts of discrimination and torture being faced by the womenfolk in families, society and workplaces.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar addressed the function as the chief guest while Chairman of Bagerhat District Council Sheikh Kamruzzaman Tuku, President of Jatiyo Party (Ershad) Khulna district unit Shafiqul Islam Modhu, Executive Member of BNP Khulna district unit Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Panel Chairman

Of Baherhat district council Advocate Sharifa Hemayet, General Secretary of Worker’s Party Khulna district unit Delwar Uddin Dilu, and President of Khulna District Women Development Forum Farjana Ferdous Nisha were present as special guests.
