Int’l Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples observed in Rangamati

RANGAMATI: The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed in the district through various programme on Wednesday.

Tribal Forum in Rangamati district organised a discussion on Rangamati municipal premises in the morning on the occasion of the day.

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council president former MP Ushatan Talukdar inaugurated the event by releasing balloons.

At that time, Tribal Forum president Prakriti Ranjan Chakma, general secretary Intu Moni Chakma and MN Larma Memorial Foundation president Bijay Ketan Chakma were present on the occasion, among others.

The speakers at the discussion demanded speedy tribal recognition according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention and said that the government is undermining the rights of the hill communities by barring tribal recognition. The people of the hills are suffering from various deprivations as they have not tribal recognition. The speakers demanded the full implementation of the agreement along with the recognition of tribal people.

After the discussion, a colourful procession was brought out from the municipality which paraded the various streets of the town and ended at Shilpakala Academy.
