Police have arrested six activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate bodies for vandalising and torching buses in Ashulia during BNP's sit-in programme on July 29.

Police held them from Dhaka, Manikganj, Khulna, Rangpur and Gazipur on Monday.

They are—Shahidul Islam, 40, joint general secretary of Dhaka district unit of Jubo Dal, Mohammad Suruzzaman, 47, assistant organising secretary of the unit, Mominul Islam, 45, member of the district BNP unit, Apurba Chandra Das, 22, member of Dhamrai municipality unit of Chhatra Dal, Razib Hossain, member of Dhamrai upazila unit of Jubo Dal and Mohammad Sujon, 34, member of the unit.

Md Asaduzzaman, superintendent of police (SP) of Dhaka district, briefed this to reporters at his office in Old Dhaka on Tuesday.

He said some BNP activists vandalised different vehicles on the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Ashulia at about 3:10pm on July 29, during the sit-in programme of BNP.

They also blasted some cocktails and set a bus of ‘Bikas Paribahan’ on fire.

Anwar Hossain, 42, driver of the bus, lodged a case with Ashulia Police Station in this regard on July 30.

Police first traced three BNP activists—Shahidul, Suruzzaman and Mominul—after scrutinising CCTV footage and held them.

During primarily interrogation, the trio admitted their involvement in the incident and informed about the rest three—Apurba, Razib and Sujon, who also admitted their guilt.

The SP said police were trying to arrest other people involved in the vandalism and torching.
