Opposition BNP will hold a rally across the country today in protest against the verdict sentencing party acting chairman Tarique Rahman to nine years and his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison in a graft case.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement while addressing a press conference at the party central office in the capital on Thursday.
The party already staged demonstrations in metropolitan cities and district towns on Thursday against the same issue.
In the capital, a rally will be held in front of the BNP headquarters at Nayapaltan which will be jointly organised by Dhaka north and south city units of the party.
As the chief guest, Fakhrul will address the rally which will start at 2:00pm.
“The district units of the party will jointly arrange the rallies with the city units. Dhaka district unit will join the rally in front of the BNP office,” he said.
At the press conference, the BNP secretary general alleged that the Awami League-led government has snatched away people’s fundamental and constitutional rights by ‘using’ the judiciary.
He said the democracy-loving people are being ‘harassed’ by the government through using the judiciary in a bid to stop the ongoing ‘democratic’ movement.
“The ongoing movement can’t be stopped even after giving punishment to Tarique Rahman and jailing other leaders and activists.”
“A serious political crisis has been created in the country through scrapping the caretaker government system,” Fakhrul added.
