Waste Management

CCC, S Korean team hold meeting

CHATTOGRAM: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) authority held a meeting on ‘Scientific Waste Management’ with a visiting consultancy team from South Korea in the port city on Monday.

The programme was held at the CCC Office in the city’s Tigerpass area.

They discussed on limitations of the existing waste management of CCC and how to overcome those limitations by taking lessons from the experience of South Korea.

CCC Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury in the meeting said the waste management in the city is getting tougher due to the rapidly growing population in the area.

“I want to implement long-term plans on producing fuels from the wastage and also on the reduction of the pollution, rather than just removing wastages,” he said.

The delegates said, CCC collects all types of wastages altogether in the existing process. As a result, it appears tough to segregate those wastages. Only eight to ten per cent of the wastages could be re-used which is not environment-friendly at all, they observed.

The wastages collect from the city are also kept in a specific area and it also produces very harmful gas and affects the environment, they said.

The CCC can utilise experiences from the South Korea for proper management of the garbage in an environment-friendly way, the delegation added.

CCC Secretary Khaled Mahmud, Mayor’s Personal Secretary and Chief Conservancy Officer Md Abul Hashem, Acting Superintendent Engineer Monirul Huda, Assistant Engineer Rifatul Karim, visiting team members Heyong Hee Youn, ShinHyun Kang and JeongWan Hong were present on the occasion.
