Dr Afsarul Ameen passes away

CHATTOGRAM: Heroic freedom fighter, former minister and lawmaker from Chattogram-10 constituency Dr Afsarul Ameen passed away in a city hospital on Friday. He was 73.

Afsarul had been suffering from lung cancer.

He was the Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee for Primary and Mass Education, and also the vice-president of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) city unit.

 His younger brother Arif Ameen said the veteran leader was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2020. He breathed his last at Square Hospital at 4:00 pm, he said.

Afsarul left behind his wife, two sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

He was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) from the constituency (Double Mooring-Pahartali-Halishahar) on the AL ticket for the three successive terms since 2008. He also served as the shipping minister and primary and mass education Minister.

It may be mentioned that Afsarul Ameen, a doctor by profession, became the focus of attention after he served people who took shelters in the shelter centres during the devastating cyclone in 1991.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor M Rezaul Karim, AL city unit acting President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, Chattogram Zila Parishad Chairman ATM Pearul Islam and Chattogram Medical University Vice-Chancellor Ismail Khan expressed profound shock at his death.

They prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended sympathy to the bereaved family members.
