Child dies as elevated expressway rod falls on him

A 12-year-old child died when an iron rod fell on his head from the elevated expressway under construction in Mohakhali of the capital on Monday.

Police said the identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. He used to live on the streets.

The accident took place around 9:30am when the child was sitting near the rail tracks.

Hearing screams, pedestrians rescued and hospitalised the child who suffered critical injuries on the head.

As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 12:45pm, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of the DMCH Police Outpost.

Abdul Qadir Emon, a pedestrian who brought him to the hospital, said that while passing through the road in the morning, he saw a crowd of people.

“I saw the child lying in a bloody state. An iron rod pierced his head. We took him to a hospital in Mohakhali,” he added.
