CHATTOGRAM: A woman and her two minor children were burnt to death while another was injured in a fire breaking out at a house in the city’s Shahid Nagar area in the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Nur Nahar Begum, 30, wife of one Mohammad Manik, their son Md Maruf, 2, and daughter Fariya, 3, while the injured was Md Imam Uddin, 23.

Sources in the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) said the fire may have been started by burning mosquito coil at a dwelling house of one Tota Mia in the area around 4:30am.

The spread fast to the adjacent houses and reduced six of them to ashes. Four persons, including the trio, got trapped in the fire and sustained severe burn injuries.         Getting information, two fire fighting units from Bayezid FSCD station rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after a frantic effort of one hour, said the sources.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bayezid Bostami Police Station Ferdous Jahan said locals rescued the four persons in a critical condition and rushed them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Quoting the on-duty doctor, the OC said Maruf died shortly after he was admitted to the hospital.
