The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has expressed concern over the increasing number of dengue cases at the beginning of monsoon, the main breeding season of Aedes mosquito, the vector of the deadly disease.
Speaking at a meeting at the health directorate in Mohakhali headquarters on Wednesday, Prof Dr Nazmul Islam, director (Disease Control), said the number of dengue patients has increased several times.
Nazmul Islam said since the raining has not started in full swing yet in the country, precautionary measures should be taken to prevent further increase of dengue patients.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters at his office on Wednesday, LGRD Minister Md Tajul Islam said the government has taken all necessary preparations to face the dengue situation.
According to the DGHS, the number of dengue patients has been increasing day by day in the country for the last few weeks as over 1,500 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals this year.
It said 35 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country, including in Dhaka, in the last 24 hours until Wednesday morning.
However, no new death was reported from the dengue disease in the country during the time.
The DGHS data said a total of 164 dengue patients were undergoing treatment across the country on Tuesday. Of them, 140 patients are receiving treatment in Dhaka city.
It said 582 dengue patients were hospitalised and two died in 24 days of May in the country.
The DGHS report further said so far 1,568 dengue patients were detected and 13 died in the country in 2023. Of the total, 1,001 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in the capital during the time.
