Four killed in N’ganj steel mill explosion

Four workers have been killed in furnace explosion at a steel factory at Rupganj in Narayanganj.   

The deceased were identified as Ilyas Ali, 35; Neon, 20; Alamgir Hossain, 33; and Shankar.  

Three of them died while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Friday as another worker was dead shortly after he was taken to the hospital, following the incident that occurred on Thursday afternoon.  

A total of seven workers sustained severe burn injuries in the furnace explosion and all of them were taken to the hospital after the incident.

The furnace explosion occurred while smelting iron at Rahima Industrial Complex Limited’s factory in Bhulta area of the upazila around 3:30pm.  

According to the institute and police sources, Ilyas died early on Friday night, Neon was dead at 10:30am on the day while Alamgir around 12:30pm and Shankar died on Thursday.               The institute’s Resident Surgeon SM Ayub Hossain said Ilyas suffered 98 percent burns, Neon 97 percent and Alamgir suffered 95 percent burn injuries.

Three other workers are now undergoing treatment in the institute. They are Jewel (25), Rabbi (35) and Ibrahim (35). Rabbi has 98 percent burns on his body while Jewel 95 percent and Ibrahim suffered 28 percent burns, he said.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost inspector Bachchu Mia said the bodies of Ilyas, Neon and Alamgir have been kept in the college morgue.

Inspector Mostafizur Rahman of Bholta Police Outpost said the factory is still under construction. Iron smelting was being done experimentally.

Around 3:30pm in the afternoon, there was a loud explosion in the iron smelting furnace.

After the explosion, the molten hot iron fell on the workers. Araihajar Fire Service Officer Shahid Alam said they did not find any fire extinguisher at the place where the incident took place. He came to know from factory sources that the safety equipment was not used.
