JP names mayoral candidates

The main opposition in parliament Jatiya Party has declared its candidates to contest the elections to five city corporations -- Gazipur, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi and Barishal.
The party chairman GM Quader made the announcement of the party’s mayoral candidates in the five city corporations at a press briefing at the party’s Banani office in the capital on Thursday.
The Jatiya Party nominated mayoral candidates are MM Niaz Uddin in Gazipur, Md. Saiful Islam Swapan in Rajshahi, Shafiqul Islam Madhu in Khulna, Iqbal Hossain Taposh in Barishal and Nazrul Islam Babu in Sylhet city corporations.
Earlier, the party held a meeting of its leaders and finalized the mayoral candidates to contest the city polls, at the Banani office with GM Quader in the chair. Top leaders of the party held the meeting with divisional leaders to determine their course of programmes for the city polls.
The city corporation elections are scheduled to be held in Gazipur on 25 May, Khulna and Barishal on 12 June, and Rajshahi and Sylhet on 2 June.
GM Quader hoped that the Election Commission will discharge their duty properly to create fair atmosphere in the city polls. “We want to be hopeful about the election atmosphere.”
“The country’s people largely have lost faith to the election. The government itself has to bring back people’s faith to the voting,” he added.
Responding to a question, the Jatiya Party chief said they will take decision about participating in the next parliament election, based on the situation.
Addressing the press briefing, the Jatiya Party secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu said they are no longer with the current Awami League government.
“We are going ahead with plan to contest in all 300 parliamentary seats in the next national polls,” he added. Jatiya Party co chairman ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader claimed that the party is now united.
“We have to take preparation now so that Jatiya Party can go to a respectable position in the next parliamentary polls,” he added.
Jatiya Party co chairman Kazi Feroj Rashid also spoke at the press conference.
