Chattogram: A fire gutted a warehouse of used tyres in the city’s Dewanhat area on Saturday afternoon.
The fire beside railway track caused suspension of train movement to and from Chattogram Railway Station for around two hours.
The fire broke out at a warehouse around 12:45pm and spread fast emitting huge quantity of black smoke.
The smoke was noticed from far away and created panic among the people of nearby areas.
A number of trains got stranded at the railway station and marshal yards at that time as the warehouse was adjacent to the railway track. On information, 13 fire fighting units from different fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire after a frantic effort of one and a halfhours, said Senior Station Officer Enamul Hoque of Agrabad Fire Station.
“Primarily, it was suspected that the fire originated from burning cigarette butt,” he said, adding that damages in the fire can be ascertained after investigation.
Chattogram Railway Station Master JafarAlam said among other trains, Sonar Bangla Express and locomotives of Mahanagar and Bijoy Express couldnot enter the station for the fire incident.
