The Election Commission has issued directives to remove all election campaign materials, including billboards, posters and banners, by the deadline for submitting nomination papers.
The schedule for five city corporation elections has been announced, but the official campaign has yet to begin. However, Gazipur, Khulna, Sylhet, Barishal and Rajshahi cities have been covered with posters of intending candidates.
The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives has been asked to implement the directive through the local governments.
If the potential candidates have campaign materials before the last date of filing nomination papers at 12:00pm, local government institutions including the City Corporation must ask the persons concerned to remove them at their own expense, according to the EC.
The election in Gazipur City Corporation will be held on May 25 while the polls in Khulna and Barishal City Corporation will be held on June 12. On the other hand, the elections in Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporation will be held on June 21.
Earlier, Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir told reporters if anyone violates the electoral code of conduct, his candidature will be cancelled.
