Bikes can use Padma Bridge from tomorrow

The government has decided to allow motorcycles to cross the Padma Bridge on an experimental basis from tomorrow.

“The motorcycles will be allowed to move using the service lane of the main bridge from 6:00am Thursday,” Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said while talking to reporters at Ganabhaban in the capital on Tuesday.

The decision was taken ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr apparently to ease the travel of home-bound people using bikes.    Earlier, the government banned the movement of motorcycles through the bridge from June 27, 2022, two days after the inauguration of the bridge following road accidents.

Quader said the authorities concerned have decided to allow bikers on the Padma Bridge following instructions from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“The bikers can’t use the main lane of the bridge. Motorcycles can only use the service lane of the Padma Bridge. Motorcycles should cross the bridge following the speed limit and the maximum speed limit for motorcycles will be 60 kms per hour,” he added.

The minister warned that if discipline is not maintained, the opportunity of riding motorcycles on the Padma Bridge will be cancelled.

Earlier, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) decided to ferry motorcycles on the Shimulia-Majhirkandi route of the Padma River during upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
