CHATTOGRAM: A court here on Thursday ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to reinvestigate the sensational murder of former Assistant Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Diaz Irfan Chowdhury.

Chattogram Senior Judicial Magistrate Awlad Hossain Junaid made the order after rejecting the final report on the case, following a hearing on the no-confidence petition filed by plaintiff Jaheda Amin Chowdhury, mother of the deceased.

“Jaheda filed the petition against the final report submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID),” said plaintiff’s lawyer Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury.

“The court has instructed the PBI to reinvestigate the case, appointing an officer of the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (SP),” he said.

The CID submitted the final report on the case on February 23 after investigating for nearly six years.

The report said that it was not a murder, but rather a suicide.

The investigator also appealed for acquittal of the accused from the case.

Mentionable, body of Diaz, also a former joint secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League Chittagong University unit, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his bedroom at their rented house in the university’s Gate-2 area on November 20 in 2016.     On November 23, it was claimed in the first autopsy report that Diaz hanged himself.

His mother Jaheda, also an employee of the university, rejected the autopsy report and filed a murder case with the Hathazari police station, accusing nine CU BCL leaders and activists and a former assistant proctor of the university on the following day.

The then CU Chhatra League President Alamgir Tipu, Assistant Proctor Anwar Hossain, Chhatra League leader Jamshedul Alam Chowdhury, Rashedul Alam Zeeshan, Abu Torab Parash, Mansor Alam, Abdul Malek, Mizanur Rahman, Ariful Haque Apu and Mohammad Arman were made accused in the murder case.

A court ordered the law enforcers to conduct autopsy again after exhuming the body from his grave at that time.

Diaz’s body was dug out from the grave at Chittagong University (CU) on December 10 in 2016 and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for the second autopsy.

The autopsy report revealed that the body bore injury marks.
