Assaulting Fellow

2 members of ‘Proloy Gang’ held at DU

Police arrested two students of Dhaka University (DU) on charges of assaulting one of their fellows on Saturday evening.

The arrestees are Naimur Rahman Durjoy of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall and Faysal Ahmed Sakib of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, who are members of "Proloy Gang" made up of by some DU students of the 2020-21 academic session.

Noor Mohammad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, said the arrest followed a complaint made by victim Zubaer Ibne Humayun's mother on Sunday night. Zubaer is a second-year           student of the university's criminology department, also a residential student of Sir AF Rahman Hall.

The complaint was lodged against 19 named DU students and six to seven unnamed ones who belong to the gang.

Tabarak Mia of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall was made the prime suspect in the complaint. The other accused are: Sifat Sahil, Faisal Ahmed alias Shakib, Md Shobhan and Syed Nasif Imtiaz alias Sayeed of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Farhan Labib of Masterda Surja Sen Hall, Arnob Khan and Abu Raihan of Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Saad, Rahman Zia and Mosharaf Hossain of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, Hedayet Nur, Mahin Monowar, Saadman Tawhid and Abdullah Al Arif of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, Prottay Saha and Joy Biswas of Jagannath Hall and Ferdous Alam of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.

The gang members are allegedly complicit in drug abuse, extortion, and assaulting outsiders on the campus especially at Suhrawardy Udyan and Shaheed Minar area at night.

DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani told the media that the university authorities would take action against the gang members if anyone files specific allegation against them.

The proctor also said they are trying to gather information on the activities of the gang members.
