CHATTOGRAM: Two goods-laden unclaimed containers have been seized while being taken away illegally from the auction yard of Chattogram Port.

Eight people, including a security guard and two Ansar men, have also been arrested in this connection.

Sources said criminals took away two containers from the port’s South Container Yard on the Airport Road on Thursday morning.

On information, the intelligence wing of the port seized a container from the Customs Mor area, several kms off the yard, and another from the yard while being taken away.

The containers were full of plastic granules and fabrics worth around Tk 50 lakh, said sources.

Assistant Sub-inspector of Port Security Department Md Maruf Hossain filed a case accusing nine identified and 10 unidentified people with EPZ Police Station in this connection on Friday.

Later, police arrested the eight people, including a security guard,

a transport worker, two on-duty Ansar men and four drivers and helpers, from different areas.

Contacted, sub-inspector Sheikh Tarikul Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, said the accused were taken on a one-day remand through a court and they were sent to jail after interrogation on Saturday.

“The interrogation revealed that the arrestees connived with each other to take away the containers without proper documents,” he said, adding that the unclaimed consignments arrived in the country on June 22 last year.
