Speakers at a views-exchange meeting laid emphasis on timely implementing the work plan approved by the government to ensure social compliance in the leather industry.
They said the timely implementation of the work plan would open the door for the tanneries of obtaining the certificates of Leather Working Group (LWG), a global multi-stakeholder community.
Once Bangladesh gets the certificates, the country would start exporting leather to Europe and other countries that would improve the tannery sector and boost the economy.
The meeting was held with the participation of Bangladesh Labour Rights Journalist Forum (BLRJF) and Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF) in Dhaka on Saturday.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment approved the two-year work plan on April 21, 2022 and directed the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments to execute it.
Chaired by President of BLF Abdus Salam Khan, Secretary General of the organisation ZM Kamrul Anam, President of BLRJF Kazi Abdul Hannan and General Secretary Ataur Rahman spoke, among others, on the occasion.
