10 killed in road crashes

At least 10 people were killed and 105 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Panchagarh, Cox’s Bazar, Noakhali, Natore, Rangamati and Chapainawabganj on Saturday.

In the capital, a college student was killed after a microbus hit his motorcycle in Arambagh area.  

The deceased was identified as Arafat Islam Tanvir, 20, son of Md Alamin and a resident of south Kamalapur Graveyard road. He was a first-year student at Abudharr Ghifari College.

Assistant In-Charge of DMCH police outpost Md Masud Mia said the accident took place near the Arambagh Royal Deluxe bus counter around 12:30am.

Salman Islam Sakib, elder brother of Tanvir, said “Tanvir and two others were returning from an event riding a motorcycle last night. Tanvir was driving the bike. They fell off the motorcycle after being hit by a microbus near the bus counter. Locals took them to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.”

Tanvir died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 9:30am, he added.

The body was kept in the morgue for autopsy.

In Panchagarh, three people were killed and at least 77 hurt in separate road crashes in Debiganj and Boda upazilas, police said.

The deceased were identified as Tamij Uddin, 60, Hasibul Islam, 32, and Swapan Ali, 25, of Tentulia.

Fifteen of the 77 injured were not out of the woods and were sent to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.

"The accident in Debiganj occurred at Lakshmirhat as a truck crashed into a bus in the afternoon. The bus, full of passengers, was returning from a three-day ijtema (congregation) in the upazila town after Akheri Munajat (final prayers). It overturned in the impact of the crash," Jamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Debiganj Police Station, said.

"One devout Muslim died at the scene and 26 others were injured. The injured were rushed to the upazila health complex. Five of them were referred to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. However, the truck driver immediately fled the scene."

"The accident in Boda occurred at Chandanbari after the tyre of a bus burst. Two people were killed,      and 51 were injured; all of them were returning from the congregation in Debiganj," Sujay Kumar Roy, officer-in-charge of Boda Police Station, said.

"The injured were taken to Boda Upazila Health Complex. Later, 10 of them were transferred to the Rangpur Medical College and Hospital."

In Cox’s Bazar, three people were dead and six were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup van at Aziznagar in Chakaria in the morning.

The incident happened around 8:30 am at the Aziznagar-12 bridge area on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway, said Khokon Rudra, sub-inspector of Chiringa Highway Police Outpost.

Two people were dead on the spot. The condition of the rest of the passengers was critical. The injured were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. The bus and the pickup van have been in police custody.

In Noakhali, a man was killed and two others injured in a road accident in front of Jamidar Bari area under Sonaimuri upazila of the district.

The deceased was identified as Md Belal Hossain, 47, son of Ali Ahmed, resident of Siladi village of Chhatarpaia union of the upazila.

The accident occurred, when a speeding pickup van hit a passenger CNG-run auto-rickshaw from behind in front of the Jamidar Bari area, the CNG fell into a road side ditch around 8am, leaving Belal died on the spot and two others injured, officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonaimuri Police Station Md. Ziaul said.

Later, the injured were taken to local hospital, the OC said.

In Natore, a college student died after a motorcycle collided head-on with a cattle-carrying locally customised vehicle, “Nosimon”, in Mougram area of Singra upazila under Natore district.

The deceased was identified as Cesar Sarkar (18), a first-year student of Bamihal Rahmat Iqbal College, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Singra Police Station.

In Rangamati, a man was killed as his motorcycle collided with a jeep head-on in Rajasthali upazila. The deceased was identified as Arif, 27.

Officer in Charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj sadar model thana Sajjad Hossain said a picnic bus carrying about 70 students of Genius Coaching Centre of Dadanchak area under Shibganj upazila in thr district was going to Swapnopalli picnic spot in Nachole upazila. Suddenly a tyre of the bus punctured and the bus plunged into a roadside ditch around 9.30 am.

 All the injured were rushed to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital. Two of them were identified as the helper of the bus Apu and elder brother of a student Dulal were rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, he added.
