27 DU students abused by BCL men in 2022

A total of 27 students of Dhaka University (DU) were subjected to physical and mental abuse by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in 2022.

Besides, 26 students were forced to leave residential halls in the same year and three journalists were harassed while performing their professional duties on the DU campus.

This information has come out in the annual report of Students against Torture (SAT), a student rights organisation.

Founder and Director of the organisation Saleh Uddin Sifat presented the report at a press conference at the office of DU Journalists' Association (DUJA) on Tuesday.

The report also said that the actual number of students who suffered torture is several times higher, as most cases go unreported. Even several members of Students against Torture (SAT) were tortured while helping students.

However, in only four of these incidents, the university authorities took administrative action.

Despite repeated attempts for comments, BCL President Saddam Hussain, General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan and its DU unit General Secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat could not be reached.

The report was prepared in line with the newspaper reports and the descriptions of the victims.
