CHATTOGRAM: A union parishad (UP) member was arrested allegedly for raping a woman tying her husband at Sitakunda upazila in the district on Monday early hours.

The arrestee was identified as Jahed Sultan Chowdhury alias Robin, UP member of a ward under Sonaichhari union of the upazila.

A police team from Sitakunda Model Police Station arrested him from a relative's house at Lalanagar area.

Sources said the victim was a garment worker and used to live at a rented house with her husband in the area.

Sources said Rabin and two of his accomplices picked up the victim and her husband while they were going through near the UP member’s office on Saturday night.

They tied up the husband and raped his wife taking to a tin-shed house in the nearby Alamgir Colony area. They also looted two mobile phone sets and gold ornaments from them at that time, they said.

Police from Sitakunda police station rescued the couple after getting a call on emergency helpline no 999, they said.

Officer in-Charge (OC) Tofael Ahmed of the police station said they conducted a drive after the woman’s husband filed a case in this connection.

“We arrested Rabin from his relative’s house at around 3:00am on Monday,” he said.

The victim was admitted to the One Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, he added.
