Moslem Uddin Ahmed, Awami League MP from Chattogram-8 constituency and a valiant freedom fighter, passed away at a hospital in the capital on Monday. He was 74.

He breathed his last at Evercare Hospital Dhaka around 12:30am, family sources said.

Moslem Uddin, also president of Chattogram South district Awami League, had been suffering from cancer for the past two years.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of the ruling party lawmaker. In a message of condolence, she said Awami League has lost a dedicated leader at the demise of Moslem Uddin.

Recalling his contribution to the party, Sheikh Hasina, also AL president, said he was elected vice-president (VP) of Govt Commerce College Student’s Union in 1969 and he joined the Liberation War at the directive of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Moslem Uddin performed responsibilities in different posts of Chattogram city and district units of Bangladesh Chhatra League from 1970 to 1982, she said.

The AL president said he had shouldered responsibility of Chattogram South AL as its general secretary from 2005-2013 and president from 2013 till date.

She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.           Moslem Uddin left behind wife, four daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

He was elected MP in the by-polls on January 13, 2020 after the parliamentary seat fell vacant at the death of former MP and Jasad leader Moinuddin Khan Badal.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also expressed deep shock and sorrow at his death and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.

Members of the cabinet also condoled his death.

The ruling party paid tribute to Moslem Uddin in the morning after his first namaz-e-janaza was held in front of its central office on Bangabandhu Avenue.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader first paid respects to the deceased freedom fighter on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

AL senior leaders, including Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Hasan Mahmud, Sujit Roy Nandi, Aminul Islam Amin and Biplab Barua, also paid homage to him.

Later, tributes were paid on behalf of Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Deputy Speaker Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku.

Later, his body was taken to Kadurkhil High School field at Boalkhali upazila in Chattogram by a helicopter in the afternoon.

Then, the body was taken to Gomdandia Pilot High School field where his second janaza was held after Asr prayers.

He will be buried at Garibullah Shah Mazar graveyard in the port city after third janaza on the premises of Jamiatul Falah National Mosque at 11:00am today, said family sources.

Deputy Education Minister Mahibul Hassan Chowdhury, Chattogram city AL acting President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin, South district unit General Secretary Mofizur Rahman, North unit President MA Salam, Chattogram Zila Parishad Chairman ATM Pearul Islam, other political and cultural organisations and individuals expressed profound shock at the demise of Moslem Uddin.
