CHATTOGRAM: A devastating fire gutted 50 shops of different items at ‘Pahartali Bazar,’ one of the largest wholesale markets, in the city’s Pahartali area on Sunday early hours.
Sources in the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) department said the fire originated from electric short-circuit at a shop at the market around 12:15am. It spread fast engulfing a total of 50 adjoining tin-roofed shops within a very short time.
The shops include grocery, vegetable, egg and meat shops among others. As none of the shopkeeper was present during the fire incident, noting could be saved from the devastating flames, said the sources. On information, five fire fighting units from different fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire after a frantic efforts of two hours, said the FSCD Deputy Assistant Director Abdul Hamid Mian.
